By achieving optimal dispersion and stability of particles, it’s possible to realise important benefits in pigmented coating properties, but the correct choice and use of a Troy dispersing additive plays a fundamental part in the process.
Particles are mutually attracted to one another by Van der Waals forces, and therefore will tend to progressively continue to do so until they generate aggregates and flocculation. Within a coating, this phenomenon can cause numerous qualitative defects. Dispersant absorption used at optimal points of particle inter-phasing, maintains the correct colloidal stability and therefore homogeneity of the coating film.
The use of a suitable dispersant also results in numerous advantages at an optical level, such as improving opacity, gloss and colour intensity.
Depending on the formulation and the pigment types to be dispersed, these dispersant additives differ both in terms of their chemical structure and the type of repulsive interaction, be it steric or electrostatic.
The dispersants from Troy offer optimised solutions to satisfy the needs of the most important coating manufacturers. There are additives available for specific use in water and solvent-based solutions as well as whether there is the presence of organic or inorganic pigments such as TiO2, iron oxides and carbon black.
Our offering of Troy dispersants includes:
– Troysperse ZWD1
A non-ionic 100% active liquid dispersant, that is VOC-free and FDA approved. Recommended for use in water-based formulations for the dispersion of organic pigments, carbon black and concentrated paste colourings.
The graphic below shows the results of comparative tests with competitor products. There is a significant cost-savings are clear in that lower quantities of ZWD1 are required to achieve excellent dispersibility performance as opposed to industry benchmarks.

– Troysperse ZWD3
A non-ionic aqueous pigment dispersant, developed in particular for effectiveness in the dispersion of carbon black.
As can be seen in the chart below, the use of Troysperse ZWD3 contributes to a lower viscosity and higher colour intensity than the industry benchmark. It also differentiates itself in terms of higher yield, which provides further benefits in lower usage costs.

– Troysperse ZWD8
This additive is a 100% active polymer dispersant. It can be used in water-based coating applications for titanium dioxide pigments guaranteeing low viscosity, excellent colour uniformity, scrub and stain resistance.
– Troysperse CD1
Developed for solvent-based formulations, Troysperse CD1 delivers an effective particle dispersal, improving the rheological and colorimetric characteristics. It is a non-ionic additive compatible with polyester, urethane, alkyd, epoxy and acrylic resins.
– Troysperse 98C
Troysperse 98C is an amphoteric polymeric additive, effective in the dispersion of pigments such as carbon black and phthalocyanines within solvent formulations. This additive maximises colour rendering and optimises production processes.
The results below show the high performance levels of this additive compared to a competing dispersant.

In short, within Troy’s complete range of dispersants, the appropriate additive can easily be selected. Not forgetting the technical and commercial support of Garzanti Specialties which remains at your disposal.
