Plant extracts has important scientific foundations and a history stretching back thousands of years, and have been used in many areas since records began.
Plant extracts, what they are and where they are found.
Many of you probably use an arnica montana ointment to treat bruises, contusions, or joint pain. Even more have been known to drink a camomile or valerian herbal tea to relax or increase their quality of sleep, whilst others still use the active ingredients contained in plants to reduce blood cholesterol levels or to reduce oxidative stress.
In short, plant extracts in different forms have been part of our lives for many millennia. When it comes to traditional Chinese medicine or Ayurveda from India, many physical ailments were and still are treated through the use of plants or roots.
Nowadays, we are used to turning to pharmaceuticals, but at times the natural remedy is better tolerated by the body and has fewer side effects.
Overcoming the limits of plant extracts.
One of the major limitations of some active ingredients is the difficulty our intestines have in absorbing them, so poor absorption reduces their effectiveness and speed of action. This is precisely why Garzanti Specialties has entered into collaboration with Sferalp.
Sferalp is a company working to improve the absorption and efficacy of many active ingredients. This technology, which is constantly evolving, would also make it possible to take substances that are important for us, at higher dosages, with reduced side effects.

Sferalp’s plant extracts.
Sferalp is a young company operating in the Swiss canton of Ticino that deals with the formulation, development and production of food supplements both under its own brand and on behalf of third parties. The company engages in extensive research and development to find innovative solutions for its customers. It has specifically focused on improving the solubilisation of active ingredients contained in plant extracts to optimise their absorption while ensuring their tolerability and safety.
As evidence to its commitment to research and innovation, Sferalp has already obtained one patent and has recently filed the application for a second. Last year it also achieved FSSC 22000 certification for food safety; testament to the rigorous quality control system it operates.
Sferalp, a great young company.
Sferalp originated from the R&D department of the pharmaceutical company Micro Sphere SA, from which it broke away in 2019 to focus on the nutraceuticals sector.
The company’s team is young, knowledgeable and able to adapt to the ever-changing needs of national and international customers. They develop products using proprietary pharmaceutical technologies thanks to the experience gained in more than 20 years in the formulations field.
Sferalp’s product line focuses mainly on botanicals with anti-inflammatory effects such as Indian Frankincense (Boswellia serrata), Turmeric (Curcuma longa), Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) and Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha).
The products are available in oil, SUNDALP® oil (a patent-applied for, natural emulsifier) or powder form.
