Organofunctional silanes play an important role in many sectors. They combine a reactive organic group and the inorganic functionality of an alkoxysilane into a single molecule acting as a coupling agent. Let’s take a closer look at Garsil silanes; what they are, how they work and where they are used.

What are organofunctional silanes.
Within the Garsil family there is a wide choice of silanes. Garsil silanes are components whose base is the silicon atom: silicon is the core element of the silanes and, like carbon, forms four bonds.

Thanks to its electropositivity, the silicon does not form stable double bonds and undergoes multiple reactions. Attaching a functional group to silane products therefore produces an extremely reactive compound.
How do Garsil silanes work.
Being so reactive, Garsil silanes react immediately with water to form silanols, characterised by OH group terminals.
Multiple silanols react with each other to form very stable siloxane bonds that, at the same time, can react with hydroxyl groups of metals to form a very strong SiO bond on the surface of the substrate (e.g. metal and glass: Figure a-b).

For this reason, Garsil silanes are also used as adhesion promoters. Organofunctional Garsil silanes play a very important role because they combine a reactive organic group and the inorganic functionality of an alkoxysilane in one molecule.
This characteristic of Garsil silanes means that they can be used as molecular bridges between organic polymers and inorganic materials.
The choice of the X functional group (amino, epoxy, glycidoxy, isocyanate, methacryloxy, etc.) depends on the nature of the organic polymer. The bond with the inorganic material is influenced by the type of OR functional group (generally methoxy or ethoxy).
